The Digitization of Learning
I found this article T.H.E Journal and I felt it was appopiate to my subject area of interest.
In such a brief article, Leslie Adams covers a lot of topics that are related to computer education and the incorporation of digital storytelling into the classroom. Adams also demonstrates how much digital media is a part of young peoples’ lives in this modern age, at least in the USA. The results of a recent study of 2,000 young people across the USA, found, that students spend eighth-and-a-half hours daily consuming media, including television, MP3 players, computers and mobile phones. Adams presents this information to explain how important media is in the lives of young people and how important it will be in their future.
Adams’ main point is titled “Re-engaging students with Digital Storytelling”, it was the word re-engaging that stuck out at me whilst reading this article and it really supports the views of the writers of the other articles I have read on digital storytelling. The notion of giving students a spark to use as a story and use the media as a springboard into some worthwhile storytelling is what appears to be the appeal of using digital storytelling in the classroom.
Adams also addresses and supports the idea of teachers moving away from monotonous text based learning to learning with digital media so as to get students motivated to learn and achieve. Adams supports the teachers that use digital media to re-engage students who are visual learners, learner who are as she states are “…left cold by traditional text based learning”.
